The largest US school districts by community population are anchored by America's biggest cities: Los Angeles Unified, New York City, Chicago Public Schools, and Miami-Dade. These mega-districts serve millions of residents within their geographic boundaries and operate budgets that rival small nations. Population size does not directly translate to enrollment — a district's student count depends on the share of school-age children and the popularity of public versus private schools. Still, large districts command the most political attention, the deepest resource pools, and the greatest diversity of student needs. Many of the country's largest districts face overlapping challenges: concentrated poverty, language diversity, aging infrastructure, and fierce competition from charter networks.
