School districts with the highest median ages serve communities dominated by retirees and empty-nesters — Florida retirement communities, Arizona resort towns, parts of the Carolinas, and rural areas experiencing outmigration of young families. The oldest districts have median community ages above 55, meaning fewer school-age children per household and often shrinking enrollment. Older communities may vote for lower school tax rates since few residents have children in the system, creating fiscal pressure for districts serving an aging tax base. These districts also face unique challenges in attracting young teachers to areas with limited amenities for working-age adults.

  • 3The national median across all states is 60.3 (Greenville at the midpoint).
