Richest US School Districts by Median Household Income

The wealthiest US school districts cluster in affluent suburbs of high-cost metro areas: the San Francisco Bay Area, Westchester County outside New York City, Boston's western suburbs, and the Northern Virginia corridor. Top-ranked districts routinely have median household incomes above $150,000 — triple the national median. High incomes fund both generous property-tax bases (which support public school budgets in most states) and private educational enrichment, creating a compound advantage for students in these communities. The wealth gap between the richest and poorest school districts is one of the most studied — and most persistent — inequalities in American education.

Key Findings

  • 1Los Altos Elementary School District leads with a median household income of $250,001, followed by Highland Park Independent School District (Dallas County) ($250,001) and Carroll Independent School District ($250,001).
  • 2Los Alamos Public Schools ranks last at $147,139, while Los Altos Elementary School District leads at $250,001.
  • 3The national median across all states is $172,606 (Upper Freehold Regional School District at the midpoint).
  • 4The top 10 states are: Los Altos Elementary School District, Highland Park Independent School District (Dallas County), Carroll Independent School District, Wellesley School District, Westport School District, Hinsdale Community Consolidated School District 181, Millburn Township School District, Darien School District, New Canaan School District, Saratoga Union Elementary School District.

Methodology

Rankings are based on American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year estimates from the US Census Bureau. All 50 states and the District of Columbia are included. The ACS surveys approximately 3.5 million households annually and provides detailed demographic, social, economic, and housing data. 5-Year estimates offer the most reliable data for state-level comparisons by averaging responses over a 60-month period. Percentages may not sum to 100% due to rounding.
