Densest US Metros by Population per Square Mile

The densest US metros are anchored by historic urban cores tightly bounded by water or mountains. The New York metro is densest at roughly 2,800 people per square mile, followed by Los Angeles, San Francisco, and the Northeast Corridor metros. Density at the metro level captures the full integrated economy including suburbs and exurbs, providing a truer picture of how urbanized a region actually is. Dense metros deliver more transit, more economic activity per acre, and lower per-capita driving, but also higher housing costs and longer-running fights over zoning and infill development.

Methodology

Rankings are based on American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year estimates from the US Census Bureau. All 50 states and the District of Columbia are included. The ACS surveys approximately 3.5 million households annually and provides detailed demographic, social, economic, and housing data. 5-Year estimates offer the most reliable data for state-level comparisons by averaging responses over a 60-month period. Percentages may not sum to 100% due to rounding.
