Largest US Metro Areas by Population

US Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) represent the most economically integrated geography in the country, combining cities, suburbs, and outlying counties tied together by commuting patterns. The largest metros, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Houston, each contain over 7 million residents, making them larger than many entire states. Metro areas are the unit at which most economic activity takes place: jobs, housing, retail, healthcare, and entertainment all flow across municipal boundaries within a single metro economy. Understanding metro-level demographics is essential for businesses, researchers, and policymakers because metros, not cities, are how Americans actually live and work.

Methodology

Rankings are based on American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year estimates from the US Census Bureau. All 50 states and the District of Columbia are included. The ACS surveys approximately 3.5 million households annually and provides detailed demographic, social, economic, and housing data. 5-Year estimates offer the most reliable data for state-level comparisons by averaging responses over a 60-month period. Percentages may not sum to 100% due to rounding.
