Educational attainment at the city level reveals where America's most educated workers cluster. College towns, state capitals, and tech hubs consistently rank highest, cities like Boulder, Ann Arbor, Cambridge, and Arlington have bachelor's degree rates exceeding 70%, far above the national average of roughly 33%. These cities benefit from a self-reinforcing cycle: universities produce educated graduates, knowledge-economy employers locate nearby to access talent, and high wages attract more educated workers. The correlation between educational attainment and median income is even stronger at the city level than the state level. Cities with the most educated populations tend to have lower unemployment, higher civic engagement, better health outcomes, and more diverse cultural offerings.

Key Findings

  • 1Newton city, MA leads with a bachelor's degree rate of 80.7%, followed by Cambridge city, MA (80.2%) and Ann Arbor city, MI (77.7%).
  • 2The gap between #1 Newton city, MA and #496 East Los Angeles Cdp, CA (10.6%) is 70.1 percentage points.
  • 3The national median across all states is 34.5% (Danbury city, CT at the midpoint).
  • 4The top 10 states are: Newton city, MA, Cambridge city, MA, Ann Arbor city, MI, Arlington Cdp, VA, Boulder city, CO, Berkeley city, CA, Carmel city, IN, Mountain View city, CA, Naperville city, IL, Bellevue city, WA.
