US Cities With Highest Work From Home Rates

The remote work revolution has transformed American cities unevenly. Cities with the highest work-from-home rates tend to be tech hubs, affluent suburbs, and communities with large knowledge-economy workforces. San Francisco, Seattle, Austin, and Denver metro cities lead nationally. The shift to remote work has profound implications for urban planning: less demand for office space, reduced commuter traffic, but also declining foot traffic for downtown businesses. Cities with high WFH rates are seeing changes in real estate patterns — workers moving to larger homes in suburbs or exurbs, co-working spaces replacing traditional offices, and "Zoom towns" emerging as remote workers flock to affordable, amenity-rich locations. Not all workers can work remotely: essential workers, service industry employees, and manufacturing workers remain tied to physical locations.

Methodology

Rankings are based on American Community Survey (ACS) 2023 5-Year estimates from the US Census Bureau. All 50 states and the District of Columbia are included. The ACS surveys approximately 3.5 million households annually and provides detailed demographic, social, economic, and housing data. 5-Year estimates offer the most reliable data for state-level comparisons by averaging responses over a 60-month period. Percentages may not sum to 100% due to rounding.
