Forests cover roughly 31% of the world's land surface and play a critical role in carbon sequestration, biodiversity, water cycling, and indigenous livelihoods. Suriname, Gabon, and the Solomon Islands have the highest forest coverage as a percentage of land area, often exceeding 90%. These countries contain some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. The Amazon rainforest, spanning Brazil and neighboring countries, is the world's largest tropical forest and is often called the "lungs of the Earth" for its carbon absorption capacity. Deforestation, driven by agriculture, logging, mining, and urbanization, destroys roughly 10 million hectares of forest annually, contributing significantly to climate change and species extinction.

Key Findings

  • 1Suriname leads with a forest area percentage of 94.4%, followed by Micronesia, Fed. Sts. (92.2%) and Gabon (91.2%).
  • 2The gap between #1 Suriname and #208 Greenland (0.0%) is 9444.7 percentage points.
  • 3The national median across all states is 32.4% (Serbia at the midpoint).
  • 4The top 10 states are: Suriname, Micronesia, Fed. Sts., Gabon, Palau, Solomon Islands, Guyana, Equatorial Guinea, American Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Liberia.

Methodology

Rankings are based on American Community Survey (ACS) 5-Year estimates from the US Census Bureau. All 50 states and the District of Columbia are included. The ACS surveys approximately 3.5 million households annually and provides detailed demographic, social, economic, and housing data. 5-Year estimates offer the most reliable data for state-level comparisons by averaging responses over a 60-month period. Percentages may not sum to 100% due to rounding.
